Shaded Woods
Picture
Information The small forest surrounding Enalia. Less then a days walk, but large enough to get lost in. The area is well-mapped, but still holds many hidden secrets and mystical creatures.

 Shadow Summoning
« Thread Started on Sept 9, 2008, 3:46am »

Kelshazzhar had been unable to acquire a shadow pan, but the local tavern had provided a small shaving mirror and a candle. At a pinch, those would do. He decided to start with a set of mushrooms, and drew a circle around them with some chalk he always carried with him, careful to ensure it never touched the shadows. He began to chalk up several runes around it, before placing the candle and the mirror outside, standing them on a rock.

Caela had been off exploring Wade Forest, when she noticed a very dark presence. It was the dark figure from earlier! She watched his actions carefully. "Just what is he doing?" She muttered, confused by his outlining of the mushrooms' shadows.

"I don't know, but I enjoy watching it."

Caela hadn't even noticed the monk crawl up next to her, and nearly jumped out of her skin when he started speaking in his quiet way. The smile on his face bothered her.

"You again." She pouted with disdain, seeming to still dislike the man for being typically belligerent. "More importantly...how does someone with your size sneak up on others?"

Kelshazzhar spoke a few words quietly, then the shadows of the mushrooms detached themselves and floated upwards, hovering in the air. Standing outside the circle, Kelshazzhar lit the candle and, using the mirror, directed its light at the shadows. Most seemed to dissapear as the light passed through them (for, after all, shadows are nothing but the absence of light), but one grew darker as the light shone on it, growing longer. Kelshazzhar muttered again, and the other shadows sank back down, leaving, hovering in the air, the one he had found, which grew larger, until, about the size of a gnome, it formed the rough shape of a man.

Kelshazzhar realised, from the movements of the shadow, that he had attracted an audience. His chance to commune with the shadows was clearly not nigh. Pretending not to notice, he reached his hand towards the shadow, and let it step onto his palm. If he had an audience, he would have to put on a show ....

Caela sensed something. Realization from Kelshazzhar? She glared at Shas'o "Oh great, we've been noticed no thanks you." She says, poking Shas'o's face.

As she turned to poke him, she realized he was already gone.

Caela sighed. "Wonderful, I wonder how long ago he left..."

"Dance," he whispered to the shadow, and, obligingly, it did so on his hand. Subtly, Kelshazzhar glanced at the mirror. It seemed at least one watcher was there still. Well, without a Shadow Pan, it would take him a while indeed to find one of the greater shadows, and only a greater one would be able to carry his comments back to their mistress, and answer his questions. For now, he would use this lesser shadow as another servant, until the audience had left.

He muttered a word of alteration, and the shadow grew larger. He placed it over his eyes, and let it form a mask over his face. It achieved nothing, but it looked impressive. Finally, he let it form a humanoid shape sitting on his shoulder. "Good," he said, and began to pack up the equipment. Later he would return, and try harder to find a greater shadow.

It was several days later. Now he had the pan from the tavern, Kelshazzhar felt the need to commune with the greater shadows. He checked around him - no noticeable visitors. Still, to be safe, he whispered to the shadows he carried with him, who obediently formed a shadow nexus, obscuring him from the vision of any watchers. Then, setting up the runed circle and a single candle so that every blade of grass had a shadow, he began the ritual, and sifted the shadows with his new pan.

To his delight, he found a greater shadow almost straight away. Perhaps they had been waiting for him.
"Kelshazzhar," it whispered. "You report so soon. What troubles you?"
"You know that our mistress revived me to await the end times. Well, I have news on them," Kelshazzhar replied. "I believe they are to commence soon. The prophecy ..."
"Are you still concerning yourself with the prophecy?" the shadow asked, laughing. Then it stopped suddenly and became serious. "Forget it," the shadow ordered, and Kelshazzhar felt himself doing so, but resisted.
"The plague of earth has already occurred," he protested.
"I told you to forget it," the shadow warned. "There is a reason our mistress ordered you to burn the prophecy - you were not supposed to read it first. Be assured that she is aware of what is happening and all goes according to plan. You will be rewarded for your faithful service, do not worry." The shadow emphasied the word "faithful", implying that if he did not drop the prophecy issue now, he may well prove unfaithful.
"Of course," Kelshazzhar said. He was not foolish enough to push the matter. But there was one more thing. "But regarding the prophecy of the fated one ... I believe he is here."
"The fated one is here?" The shadow asked, surprised. "Our reports had him in Gralus ..."
"He came from there," Kelshazzhar prompted. "If you could reveal more of the fated prophecy to me, I may be able to convert him to our cause."
"Plans are in progress," the Shadow replied. "Your willingess to assist is noted but unnecessary. But thankyou for warning us of this new development. Our mistress will be most interested."
The shadow moved to depart ...

This human is very strange. The fourth human I have seen, and yes he is very strange.

Gor watched from the bushes. The man was talking to himself - or to the darkness - but what difference did it make?

This is not good, no no, this is not good at all. Gor must get help. This man wants to take the woods from the Gorks, yes, that is what he wants.

Humans are no good, no good at all. Fourth human is very bad.

Gor sat still deciding weather to go get help or approach the man.

He considered throwing a rock.

Kelshazzhar was still troubled by the shadows words, but the other shadows were still aware enough to notice the goblin.
Probably best not to attack him Kelshazzhar thought to himself.

Andreas was seeking out Kelshazzhar after he had dissapeared at the tavern. Kelshazzhar had whispered a name he should not know, and Andreas was determined to find out how he knew it.

He found Kelshazzhar in the woods. He decided to announce his presence. "Kelshazzhar, I would have words with you," he boomed. Kelshazzhar turned, but didn't move. Andreas walked up to him. "I would have you honour your bargain and tell me of that which you mentioned. Do not think of lieing to me. I am a man of high morals, but I once joked that the only time I would consider summoning a demon was for crucial historical research. It was a joke then, but its also entirely seriously. Do not think I would not ... make your life difficult ... if I thought you were lieing."

Kelshazzhar glanced at where he thought a goblin was, and cast his mind back to the shadows. Perhaps now was a good time leave.
"Very well," he said. "But we must leave here and go to a bright place before I will discuss."

Gor is very well hidden! Human fools. They cannot see me.

Gor remembered the animal trap he made the previous day. It should still be setup. The trap itself consisted of a trip wire which triggered a large boulder. Easily large enough to crush a mushy human.

Gor decided to would be best to lead the humans to this area. When he felt the time was right he jumped out and approached the darker man, who had previously been joined by a silly looking blue human.

"Both of you must follow me," he quickly said in his raspy voice.

"Please." he added, looking as innocent as goblin creature can.

"No time, must dash," Andreas said. He indicated at Kelshazzhar. "He has some explaining to go." They pushed past the goblin and made their way to a bright place.
